The Ridiculous Rhyme Show

On Thursday 9/5 we were lucky enough to attend The Ridiculous Rhyme Show. The Ridiculous Rhyme Show by CBeebies presenters Joe Chambers and Andrew Crawford is a primary school show which uses comedy to promote rhyming and poetry to students. The kids found it very funny. They had to think of rhyming words, sang funny songs and did some dancing at the end.

What are some words that you know that Rhyme?

Indigenous Performance

Today we watched a performance by Sean Choolburra! Some of our students were selected to help Sean play an instrument, do a dance or act out a story. The students were very entertained and stayed engaged throughout the entire performance.

As part of our focus on cross curriculum perspectives on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, we are pleased to host indigenous performer Sean Choolburra. Sean was born and raised in Townsville and his ancestors are Gu-GuYalanji, Kalkadoon, Kandju and Bwgcolman from around Townsville and Palm Island. He trained and toured internationally with the Bangarra Dance Company and was the creator and leader of the Naroo Dancers. Charismatic, vibrant and captivating, Sean fuses his engaging energy and humour with historical facts, spiritual wisdom, depth of ancestral understanding and knowledge, he is a very exciting and talented cultural ambassador. Dance, stories, painting, fire creation, didgeridoo playing - all are presented with a wonderful array of artefacts, from fishing nets to hunting shields.

Writing

At the start of the term we made a sentence buddy to remind us of the important parts of a sentence. Each sentence needs to make sense, have a captial letter and an end mark (full stop, exclamation mark etc). During our writing lessons we pit stop and students check they have used these.

We have been learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives during our writing lessons. During our pit stop students have been identifying their nouns (yellow), verbs (green) and adjectives (purple).

Students will also start using a seed journal that will have a collection of pictures that might inspire students to write during 'The Writing Process'.  We have made name plates for our journals.
If you have any pictures of things your child may be interested in writing about please email them into us, or send in a copy so we can stick them into their journal. These are some examples of seeds we think the children may find intriguing! Photos from magazines...

Pictures of their favourite toys...

                                                                   or collections of objects....

Thank you for your support. We hope you have a wonderful holiday break.

Social and Emotional Learning

During our SEL lessons we have been reading the book 'Unique Monique' by Maria Rousaki. This book is about a girl called Monique who likes to be different and wears different things to stand out in the crowd. We discussed how each person is unique and it would be boring if we were all the same and liked the same things. Students thought about what made them unique.
